Cameraman carjacked by robber in story he was covering

Robber crashed stolen vehicle at gas station

AUSTRALIA – An Australian cameraman became a part of the story he was covering earlier this week.

Peter Steer, a 7News photojournalist, was on his way to an armed robbery story when a man on a motorcycle flagged him down. The man, Jule Brook, told Steer that he was the man police were looking for in that armed robbery, and broke into a tearful confession about assaulting a woman in her home.

He reportedly asked the cameraman to call police, but then changed his mind. Brook stole the news van at gunpoint and drove off.

"I wanted to get that shot of him with the gun," Steer said. "But I didn't want to get shot."

Brook later crashed the van into a fence and a gas tank at a Petro gas station and was taken into custody by police. He has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, armed robbery and car theft.

"He was more than willing at first to go quietly," Steer told NBC News. "But I suppose something tweaked into his mind that now I'll do this in a big way."
