The commission is chartered to promote a strong economy, healthy environment and high quality of life for residents in the Great Lakes basin.

As a member of congress, Miller was on the Water Resource Subcommittee, and as the public works commissioner for Macomb County, she is responsible for more than 600 drains and waterways that flow into Lake St. Clair.

"Throughout my lifetime, my principle advocacy has been the protection of our Great Lakes," Miller said. "I look forward to working with the commission to address these issues and more."
