Carjacking at Detroit gas station caught on tape

Video shows victim being ambushed outside station at Fenkell, Wyoming

DETROIT – Surveillance cameras were rolling early Wednesday morning when a carjacking unfolded at a gas station on Detroit's west side.

It happened just before 2 a.m. at the Valero station at Fenkell and Wyoming avenues.

The video shows the victim walking to his Dodge Magnum, which is parked in front of the station, when another man with what appears to be a gun ambushes him.

The victim throws the keys to the car on the ground and backs away.

The carjacker grabs the keys and takes off in the car.

A short time later, Highland Park police spotted the car at West Grand Boulevard and Woodward. Four men inside the car got out and ran.

Police recovered the car but continue to look for suspects in the crime.

This latest carjacking at a Detroit gas station comes just weeks after Police Chief James Craig said he wouldn't stop at a gas station in the city at night.

"I wouldn't (stop)," he said. "But, if I had to ... I would probably be very aware of my surroundings."

Craig's comments were made a day after 31-year-old Gregory Whitfield was killed during a carjacking attempt at a gas station.
