Carmen Harlan honored by Detroit City Council ahead of retirement

DETROIT – Carmen Harlan was honored Tuesday morning by the Detroit City Council for her 38 years of service to the city.

"I have admired her since I was a little girl," Mary Sheffield said. "Growing up watching her on television, all the way up until now, I have truly enjoyed watching Carmen Harlan on television, and we're truly going to miss you."

Sheffield praised Carmen for staying in Detroit for her entire career and being dedicated and compassionate about the city. She said Carmen entered the field of broadcast journalism when it was dominated by white men, but that didn't stop her.

"She paved her way," Sheffield said. "A Detroit girl went right into that field, paved her way, and really showed the way for other people to follow behind her."

Sheffield named some of Carmen's career achievements and presented her with a plaque.

"One of the stories I love telling, wherever I go, is that I'm a Detroiter," Carmen said. "I've never hesitated, never felt the least bit shy about it, and I've always bragged about the strength of the core of this city. It is here, it is present and it is moving in the right direction."
