Police: 4-year-old shot after getting grandfather's gun from atop refrigerator at Detroit home

DETROIT – A 4-year-old boy is in critical condition after shooting himself with his grandfather's gun Sunday night in a home on Detroit's west side, police said.

"The grandfather, who works security, was getting ready. He took his weapon, the firearm, put it on top of the refrigerator, went downstairs," said Capt. Mark Bliss. "The 4-year-old, who was in the kitchen, basically climbed up and got to the firearm. He was basically looking at it, playing with it."

The gun discharged, shooting the boy in his abdomen, Bliss said.

The boy is being treated at Sinai-Grace Hospital.
Bliss said the grandfather does have a license for the gun.
