Boy, 9, dies from self-inflicted gunshot wound in Detroit

Boy's father arrested on unrelated felony warrant

DETROIT – A 9-year-old boy has died after shooting himself with a shotgun in a home on Detroit's west side.

Police Chief James Craig said the shooting happened just before 1 p.m. Monday in a home on Barton Street.

Craig said the boy's father and two other siblings were in the home at the time of the shooting. He wasn't sure why the boy was not at school. Investigators believe the shotgun belongs to the boy's father. Police said the gun was found in a closet in the home.

The boy's father is being questioned by police. The investigation is on-going.

UPDATE: The boy's father has been arrested on a felony warrant out of Southfield.

"It's a very tragic day, very tragic time, and not only has it affected the family but it's affected many of our first responders and police officers who responded, to have to go and investigate this matter," said Craig.

A neighbor said she walked outside and saw the big police presence.

"I got kids of my own, and to see this happen right here on the same street that you live on, right across the street from you ... I go in and come back out and all the police are out here," said Kim, a neighbor.

Local 4 is on the scene and will update the story as more information becomes available.
