DNA links prisoner to 1991 rape case in Clinton Township

CLINTON TWP., Mich. – His name is Roderick Hunter.

He's 51 years old now. When he was a younger man back in 1991 he stalked a woman shopping in the area of Garfield Road and Canal in Clinton Township. He followed her to her condo nearby where he sexually assaulted her.

Hunter has been in prison since 2005 on an unrelated conviction for criminal sexual conduct. There could be more victims.

"He's got convicted of one, he's admitted to a second one. Based upon his M.O., we know the stocking cap, the rain slicker, the gloves, the whole thing ... he may be very well-involved in some more," said Clinton Township Police Capt. Richard Maierle.

Because of the statute limitations, Hunter can't be charged in this cold case. However, there are other reasons to pursue it.

"Even if we are unable to proceed on any other unreported cases, the fact is Mr. Hunter will be eligible for parole. We intend to submit this information to the Department of Corrections for consideration prior to any release on parole," said Steve Fox, Macomb County assistant prosecutor.

The hope is if there are other victims of Hunter, they will come forward.

"We want people who may have been afraid to come forward previously to come forward now, to know that the gentleman responsible is currently in custody in the Michigan Department of Corrections on an unrelated assault matter," said Fox.
