Son of longtime former Mayor Coleman Young to follow father's footsteps

DETROIT – Coleman Young Jr., son of former Detroit mayor, Coleman Young, has announced he plans to run for the city's top job, sources said.

The announcement was made during a television broadcast Sunday afternoon.

The younger Young started his political career in 2006 as he was elected for two terms in the Michigan House of Representatives.

The Democrat currently serves as a state senator, but said he wants to take on the challenges facing the Motor City.

Just over two weeks ago, Mayor Mike Duggan announced his reelection bid at the Samaritan Center on the east side.

Facing potential school closures in the city, Duggan highlighted his achievements, which include improved city services and thousands of LED street lights.

The nonpartisan mayoral primary is in August. The top two vote-getters move on to the November general election.
