"Some Halloween costumes reinforce stereotypes of particular races, genders, cultures, or religions," the school said in a statement. "Regardless of intent, these costumes can perpetuate negative stereotypes, causing harm and offense to groups of people."

The University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse held a seminar this week titled "Is Your Costume Racist?"

Other schools have posted what they call a Halloween checklist which asked "Is your costume offensive?"
