21-year-old Oakland University student killed in crash on 12 Mile Road in Madison Heights

MADISON HEIGHTS, Mich. – Police say 21-year-old Cody Petzold, from Holly, was killed Friday morning in a crash on 12 Mile Road.

Police say the driver went around the barricades blocking the entrance ramp from 12 Mile to southbound I-75. The vehicle went off the overpass, rolled over and landed on 12 Mile. Construction crews had removed a portion of the ramp to fix structural damage from a previous accident.

Petzold was killed and the passenger was transported to the hospital.

Twelve Mile Road was closed between Stephenson and John R while police took measurements of the accident. It has since reopened after the Madison Heights Police Department and Michigan State Police closed it Friday morning while investigating the accident.

It's unknown if alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Petzold was a student at Oakland University, which released this statement on the tragedy:

"Cody was a highly regarded scholar and student leader at Oakland University and the news of his death has saddened our campus community," said Glenn McIntosh, interim vice president for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this most difficult time."
