DEARBORN, Mich. – From the moment you pull up to the intersection of Woodworth and Prospect in Dearborn, the odor is hard to miss.
"It's getting to, at some point it's nauseating," one man told Local 4.
Many residents believe what they smell is natural gas. They say the odor is coming from underground, just below a patch of dirt.
"It's dangerous, very dangerous," says Samer Chalak, a father of small children.
This is a neighborhood bustling with children and with a park and elementary school across the street.
"It's kind of unnerving," said one man who asked not to be identified.
He went on to tell Local 4 that he saw a utility crew working on the area last month. They allegedly marked the spot with yellow spray paint, and didn't return.
"They did a surveillance of the area, they had flagged the leak itself and we haven't seen them since. And that was 2 weeks ago," said the man.
And the start of school is just a day away.
One homeowner said, "My main concern is that it's near a public school, it's in a high traffic area."
One big concern is the possibility of an explosion. Local 4 spoke with a DTE spokesperson Monday night. They had no reports of a working gas leak in the area.
Residents hope someone looks into their complaints.
