The issues behind secret, taboo surgeries on young girls performed by a local doctor

Tonight at 11 - The Defenders tackle the medical, ethical and cultural issues

DETROIT – A Metro Detroit doctor was secretly doing forbidden surgeries on girls as young as 7 years old, according to federal authorities. It’s been a common practice around the world for centuries – a taboo ritual with deeply religious and cultural roots.

Local 4 tackles the medical, ethical and cultural issues behind this illegal practice, tonight at 11 p.m. As this controversial case is set to go in front of a judge, the Defenders reveal what was happening to children inside a local medical clinic, why it was being done and what’s being done about it.

The numbers are staggering. According to the Centers for Disease Control, as least half a million women in the U.S. have undergone genital mutilation or are at risk of having it done in the future. Tonight at 11 on Local 4 News, the Defenders talk about this historic criminal case unfolding.

If convicted, Dr. Jumana Nagarwala could get life in prison. The Feds say there are likely more victims out there we may learn about as the trial goes forward.
