Simple steps needed to release 'White Boy Rick' from prison

Rick Wershe, also famously known as ‘White Boy Rick,’ is Michigan’s last remaining juvenile non-violent drug offender who still remains behinds bars.

Wershe has been in prison since he was convicted of possessing more than 650 grams of cocaine at 17-years-old.

He received a life sentence for his crime.

A crime, which if he committed today, would yield a maximum of 11 years for the non-violent drug offense.

Local 4 defenders explain what exactly needs to happen for White Boy Rick to be freed from prison:

The solution, experts say, may be simpler than one might think. All it takes now is for elected officials or the Michigan parole board to act on it.

“Every second every minute, every hour of every day is an injustice, people have to act now.” said Neil Rockind, Local 4’s legal expert.

Wayne county judge Dana Hathaway said attempted to re-sentence Wershe last September, but prosecutor Kim Worthy objected.

Now, Worhy has had a change of heart after she announced she would be ‘re-evaluating her position’ on his parole.

“The fastest, quickest way, if Kym Worthy has changed her mind, is to go right back to judge Hathaway” said Rockind

There are procedural rules that would require the prosecutor, the judge and Werche’s attorney to make the appropriate filings.

Rockind said this could be done within days, and Wershe could go free adding that if governor Snyder overruled the state parole board, action could be taken immediately.

“If the governor said he is out at 4 p.m., then Rick Wershe walks out at 4 p.m.,” he said.

Rick Wershe's attorney and the Local 4 defenders will be reaching out  to the prosecutor, the  governor, the judge,  and the parole board to see if any of them are willing to take pro-active steps to help write the final chapter in the story of the legend of White Boy Rick.
