Detroit City councilman arrested on suspicion of drunken driving

Scott Benson arrested Sunday by Southfield police on Southfield Freeway service drive

DETROIT – Local 4 has learned that Detroit City councilmember Scott Benson was arrested Sunday evening on suspicion of drunken driving. Southfield police confirm he will be charged with Operating While Intoxicated, a misdemeanor.

Sources said Benson was arrested by Southfield police when he was found sleeping behind the wheel of his running car on the Southfield Freeway service drive.

Benson's car was impounded. He was released on bond Monday morning.

"We have recently learned that misdemeanor charges have been brought against Councilman Scott Benson," said Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and City Council President Brenda Jones in a joint written statement. "We have no first-hand facts about the matter and we will not speculate. Instead we will let the judicial system proceed in its normal course.  In the meantime, we will remain focused on getting the City's business done."

Neither Benson nor his attorney had a comment when approached by Local 4.

Benson represents the city's District 3.
