DETROIT – A Detroit firefighter is recovering after suffering burns while battling a blaze late Christmas day in the city's Boston Edison District.
The fire initially started at a single apartment in a building on Boston Boulevard at Dexter Avenue, but then exploded into the entire upper half of the building.
The five families in the building were able to get out safely, but it was hard for them to watch their homes burn.
"It was heartbreaking," said Robin Yarbourough.
Yarbourough and her 73-year-old father are now staying inside their car to keep warm.
The Red Cross is helping the displaced residents with a temporary hotel stay.
"After that, we're on our own," Yarbourough said.
Falling power lines around the apartment building landed on a Detroit fire engine, stranding firefighters inside their own rig until the power could be shut off.
The firefighter who was hurt is expected to be OK.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
