Detroit police: Boy shoots dad in attempt to break up fight

DETROIT – Detroit police say a 10-year-old boy shot his father early Monday morning in an attempt to break up an argument between his parents.

The incident happened around 3:30 a.m. in a home on Buena Vista Street.

Police say the boy's parents were fighting when the boy got the gun and shot his father in the back.

The 36-year-old father is in critical condition.

The boy told police the shooting was an accident and has since been released to a relative.

The boy's aunt on his father's side told Local 4 that when she heard what happened, she couldn't believe it. She said she knows it was a terrible accident.

"He loves his daddy. They got a real good bond. He has been in his kids' life all their life. He loves his kids," said the aunt, who asked not to be identified.

She's angry her nephew had access to a gun. "I don't know where the gun came from. I don't know where that gun came from and it should have never been in that house," she said.
