"We are currently trying to move our region forward by expanding modes of transportation for our citizens and visitors," said Prosecutor Kym Worthy in a news release. "This alleged and senseless violence will not be tolerated. We have charged this defendant with murder in the first degree and if convicted, she will serve the rest of her life in prison."

Edwards is expected to be arraigned in 36th District Court at 10:30 a.m. Friday

What happened:

The stabbing happened Wednesday just before 4 p.m. when the bus was stopped near Rosa Park and West Grand boulevards.

Police said the victim, who was in her 50s, reportedly bumped the person of interest with her walker.

"There were numerous other witnesses on the bus when the altercation broke out, and several citizens did intervene and break up the fight," said Captain Nick Kyriacou, of DPD. "During that melee, the victim was stabbed by the perpetrator."

The victim was taken to Henry Ford Hospital, but died from her injuries.

After the incident, police had released this picture of the person of interest they were looking for.
