DETROIT – A dog appearing to be abused and left for dead was found on the doorstep of Almost Home animal haven in Southfield.
The shelter is looking to police and the public to find out who's responsible for abandoning the dog. Workers said it's not the first time this has happened.
"We found this poor little Sarah stuffed in this tiny little crate," Karissa Parrens said.
Surveillance video shows Sarah was dropped off at 9 p.m. Thursday, so she spent 12 hours trapped in the crate.
Workers found the English Bulldog in bad shape.
"It's very disturbing," Parrens said. "She's shaking still. You can see the pain in her eyes. These people tortured and abused her. She can't feel her back legs. She can't even move her back legs."
Gina Perry had to break open the crate just to get Sarah out.
"She's about 55 pounds and this is up to 20, and she's 55 pounds," Perry said. "So this is way too small for her."
Photos and video show just how much pain the dog was in.
"As I was trying to open it she was just screeching and crying and I couldn't get it open fast enough because I couldn't figure out how to get her out," Perry said.
Police have been notified and the next step will be to review security video for any clue as to who did this.
"We will get to the bottom of this," Parrens said. "We will find out who did this. We can't let whoever did this get away with it."
Parrens said surgery for Sarah will cost $10,000. The veterinarian said there's a 50 percent chance she will be able to walk again.
Almost Home told Local 4 it's now almost at capacity and doesn't want to turn any animal away, but funding is tight and it's worried about closing its doors.
