Driver arraigned in fatal SMART bus accident in Troy

Pedestrian killed at intersection of Crooks Road and Maplelawn Drive

TROY, Mich. – The bus driver in a deadly SMART bus accident that happened in Troy in late November was arraigned Thursday on one charge of a moving violation causing death.

James Gabriel Maholmes pleaded not guilty. The 42-year-old Lathrup Village man hit a pedestrian at the intersection of Maplelawn Drive and Crooks Road in Troy on Nov. 26, 2014.

Sally LaMay, 37, of Troy, was hit while crossing Maplelawn Drive in the crosswalk when a bus turned from Crooks Road onto Maplelawn Drive.  LaMay was killed instantly.

Street lighting was in proper working order and weather was clear at the time of the accident.

Maholmes' personal bond was set at $5,000. His next court date is March 18 at 52-4 District Court in Troy.
