Driver dies in crash after police chase in Romulus

Crash happened Thursday morning on Beverly Road

ROMULUS, Mich. – Michigan State police are investigating a deadly crash that stemmed from a police chase in Romulus.

Romulus Director of Public Safety John Leacher said in a statement that an 18-year-old man was killed when his car hit a pole on Beverly Road as he fled from an officer around 1 a.m.

Leacher said the officer had been looking into complaints about threats and slashed tires outside a home when he came upon the victim sitting in a car. When he asked the victim to step out, the victim took off, Leacher said.

"The Romulus Police Department, and the entire Romulus community, are deeply saddened by this tragic loss of life and our thoughts and prayers go out to the family," Leacher said.

Romulus police have turned over the case to Michigan State police.
