Driver who caused Melvindale gas line explosion charged with drunk driving

24-year-old crashed July 2 near Allen and Greenfield roads

MELVINDALE, Mich. – A 24-year-old man who crashed into a gas line in Melvindale early this month, causing a enormous fireball that was seen for miles, has been charged with drunk driving.

The driver was hospitalized with burns after the crash on July 2. He will be arraigned next week.

The crash caused a natural gas line at a DTE Energy facility to rupture, sparking the explosion. It torched the immediate area, but no DTE workers were hurt.
