Driver won't be charged in accident that resulted in Garden City High School student athlete's death

Vincent Meiers hit along Middlebelt in Westland on Feb. 28, dies days later

WESTLAND, Mich. – Westland police said charges won't be brought against a driver who hit a popular Garden City High School student athlete.

Vincent Meiers, 18, was walking home the evening of Feb. 28 after an awards ceremony when he was hit along Middlebelt Road near Warren.

He died a couple of days later in the hospital.

Police said it appears Meiers was walking close to the roadway because there was too much ice and snow on the sidewalk.

The 42-year-old Livonia woman who hit him with a Chrysler minivan stayed at the scene and isn't being considered responsible.

Meiers was a senior and on the football team.
