Eastbound I-94 at M-39 reopens after tanker fire

Section of interstate closed Wednesday after tanker exploded

DEARBORN, Mich. – The eastbound lanes of Interstate 94 in Dearborn reopened Saturday evening after a major tank explosion earlier this week.

A tanker fire on I-94 in Dearborn burned for nearly two hours Wednesday, sending flames and thick black smoke billowing into the air.

The AKA Fuels tanker exploded around 11 a.m. in the eastbound lanes. It was extinguished around 1 p.m.

Michigan Department of Transportation spokesman Rob Morosi said a detailed investigation into the fire's effect on the roadway will need to be done.

Roughly 150 feet of pavement in the eastbound lanes had to be ripped out, cleaned up and repaved. Work started Wednesday night and continued into the weekend.

MDOT hoped to have the section of I-94 reopened by Monday morning. The section reopened after 6 p.m. Saturday.
