Detroit News endorses Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson for president

First time in 143 year history paper is not endorsing Republican

DETROIT – For the first time in the 143-year history of the Detroit News, the newspaper is not endorsing the Republican candidate for president.

However, the paper isn't backing Democrat Hillary Clinton either.

In a surprise move, the Detroit News is endorsing Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson.

The paper admits Johnson is an extreme long shot, but says he is the candidate who most closely reflects the paper's core values, especially on the issue of trade.

The Detroit News editorial staff calls Trump and Clinton quote "distasteful."

Detroit News editorial page editor Nolan Finley was on Local 4 News Today at 6:30 a.m. to further explain the paper's decision.
