6,000 customers without power

DEARBORN, Mich. – A fire broke out Monday morning at a DTE Energy substation in Dearborn leaving about 6,000 customers without power in the area.

Fire crews responded to the scene just before 7 a.m. at a location off Warren Avenue just west of Schaefer Road.

DTE said about 6,000 customers in the immediate area are without power because of the fire.

The utility company is using generators and trying to switch customers to other power sources.

Red Cross opens shelter for those affected by outage:

The American Red Cross, with support from the city of Dearborn, will be operating a 60-bed warming shelter in response to extensive community-wide power outages resulting from a reported early morning fire at an electrical substation. The shelter space is open only to people affected by the outage.
DTE Energy is working to bring in generators to restore power to the area while they work on repairing the substation, but officials indicate it will likely be tomorrow before power is restored for most residents in the affected area.
When: Beginning at 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 23. The shelter will be open overnight, and a decision will be made in the morning about whether to extend shelter services based upon situational realities at that time.
