Fire rips through recycling center in Salem Township

Flames prompt 5-alarm response

SALEM TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A five-alarm fire at a recycling center Sunday, which prompted a multi-jurisdictional firefighter effort to put it out, has left a pile of debris where a building once stood in Salem Township.

Firefighters were still dousing the debris on Monday. The following images of the aftermath, and the video above, are from Monday afternoon.

Mark Nighbor, vice president of communications for Advanced Disposal, said between 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Sunday a person saw smoke coming from the material recycling facility and called the fire department.

The facility, which recycles paper products and plastics, was closed Sunday. There have been no reports of any injuries and no evacuations at this time, according to a news release from the Salem Township Fire Department.

The release said the Fire Department asked people with respiratory problems to stay inside during the fire.

It is unknown how the fire started. Michigan State Police will assist with the investigation into the cause of the fire.
