Sneakerhead Stock Market

For thousands of dedicated fans, sneakers are much more than comfortable footwear.

They’re objects of obsession, to be collected, coveted and preserved. So-called “sneakerheads” go to great lengths to buy hot sneakers at boutiques like Burn Rubber in Royal Oak, because the shoes are often worth many times retail price on the secondary market.

The resale sneaker world is a $1.2 billion industry, and drew the attention of business mogul Dan Gilbert.  He recruited Josh Luber, the founder of a sneaker data company called Campless, and together they launched StockX – a new stock market for things, based in Detroit.

Sneakerheads can buy and sell high-value sneakers on StockX without fear of fakes. Nick Monacelli takes you inside the passionate world of sneakerheads.
