Fishing seasons to open Saturday in Michigan

Several fishing seasons open Saturday in Michigan.

The statewide trout fishing season and Lower Peninsula inland walleye, northern pike and muskellunge fishing seasons open Saturday in Michigan.

The walleye, northern pike and muskellunge seasons in the Upper Peninsula open May 15.

The catch-and-immediate-release season for bass is open year-round, while the possession season will open on May 27 for all waters except Lake St. Clair, the St. Clair River and the Detroit River. Those possession seasons open June 11.

According to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, anglers typically spend 28 million days on the water and generate $4.4 billion in economic activity. It generates $623 million in local, state and federal tax revenue. Additionally, the DNR estimates that sportfishing supports nearly 38,000 jobs.
