DETROIT – Scattered flurries and light snow will gradually end this evening, followed by clearing skies, followed by more clouds moving in toward dawn.
The morning rush hour should be dry, but light snow will develop by late morning. Total snow accumulation through Thursday night should average around an inch to an inch-and-a-half, with the lower amounts to the south and higher amounts to the north.
Thursday will start in the teens, with temperatures rising into the upper 20s...but it's going to be breezy, with southwest winds at 15 to 20 mph...so wind chills will be in the teens.
Light snow should gradually taper off on Friday, with temps holding in the mid 20s as colder air streams in (this is not the Arctic Blast).
Partly cloudy on Saturday, with highs only in the low 20s...a cold, but mostly uneventful day for the start of the Auto Show at Cobo Center, and the start of the PBA Tour's Tournament of Champions (first major tournament of the year) at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park! NOTE: A weak upper level disturbance will track from Minnesota southeastward through Indiana on Saturday.
Right now, I think most of us will not have any impacts from this little system, but those of you in the far southwestern part of our area -- this means you, Lenawee County -- may just get clipped by some very light snow. As we just saw with yesterday's Alberta Clipper system, small changes in the tracks of these systems mean big changes to the forecast. This is not a big storm, so I'm not that concerned, but if it does take a farther northward track, then I'll have to expand the light snow area northward.
Sunday and Monday look dry, with highs near 30. By the way, thinking ahead to what will be a three day weekend for some, skiing conditions both here in southeast Michigan and up north are fantastic. I mention this here because most of you start planning this stuff on Wednesday and Thursday!
And now, about that Arctic Blast. We have a chance for some light snow on Tuesday and, by Tuesday night, more bitter cold air (but not nearly as bad as the last polar outbreak) plunges across the Great Lakes. Lows Tuesday night will be down into the single numbers, and highs on Wednesday should hold only in the mid teens.
I know you'll ask, so I'll just mention right now that my super long range computer models suggest mostly below average temperatures through the end of the month.
