Former classmates feed homeless, pass out blankets for Halloween

PONTIAC, Mich. – A group of former high school classmates reunited Saturday, but it wasn't to hand out candy.

The volunteers instead passed out healthy food and things like blankets and socks to those in need.

For Halloween, the friends from Pontiac Northern class of '82 reunited to feed the homeless.

"I always think that we are one check away from (being homeless)," said Mary Evans, Class of 1982 Rocks. "If you've ever spoke with the homeless, they come from some great families, good jobs. Things have happened in their lives that have put them where they're at. And we know that if you don't give up, you can come back from that."

The group raised money to buy supplies. Pontiac Meals on Wheels provided the healthy lunches.

With the food and blankets loaded up, the drivers hit the road, traveling to several warming centers and homeless shelters in Pontiac and Detroit.

"We have a places to live but we're poor," said Roger Yennior. "All the money goes on the bills and we can't eat."

The former classmates were able to travel across metro Detroit thanks to Alternative Transportation, an organization that transports people with non-emergency medical issues.

The group plans to do it again next Halloween. For information to volunteer, email mga_mary@yahoo.com.
