Former West Bloomfield JCC camp counselor survives overdose before serving child porn sentence

WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich. – The former camp counselor at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield convicted of distributing child pornography overdosed on drugs Wednesday just before his 10-year prison sentence was scheduled to begin.

Matthew Kuppe was sentenced April 11 and walked out of the courtroom under terms of returning 60 days later to serve his federal prison sentence. Family members found Kuppe unresponsive in their home and he was taken to the hospital.

Kuppe’s bond was canceled and a warrant was issued for his arrest. He was taken into custody after surviving the overdose.

According to federal investigators, Kuppe took pictures of underage campers and sent them to a Russia-based child porn website. In his plea deal, Kuppe admitted posting photos of three boys, ages 5 and 6.
