GM extends deadline for ignition switch compensation

Deadline extended through January

DETROIT – General Motors will extend its deadline for the ignition switch compensation program. Administrator Kenneth Feinberg said that claims will now be accepted throughout January, giving customers an additional month to act.

GM established the fund to compensate victims and families of victims that were affected by the automaker's faulty ignition switch.

Last week reports surfaced that GM ordered 500,000 replacement switches months before it told safely investigators about the problem with the faulty parts. The problems with those cars led to at least 30 deaths.

The program began on Aug. 1 and reported that it received 1,851 claims for deaths and serious injuries by Nov. 7.

The company says its goal is to reach every person that was affected by the faulty switches.
