Grandson charged after 82-year-old man found bludgeoned with hammer, home doused with accelerant

SUMPTER TOWNSHIP, Mich. – The 22-year-old grandson of a man found bludgeoned with a hammer in Sumpter Township was arraigned on multiple charges Tuesday morning.

Thomas Charles Cahill, 22, is charged with assault with intent to murder, torture, second-degree arson, larceny in a building and fraud. He was also charged as a habitual offender.

Original report: Sumpter Township man critically injured in trailer park attack

Officers were called to a home on Arizona Street in the Holiday West Mobile Home Community on Dec. 2 on the report of an assault. According to police, an 82-year-old man was found serious and traumatic injuries to his head and the residence, along with the victim, had been doused with an accelerant. The stove burners were left on, filling the home with natural gas.

The victim is in critical condition.

Police said Cahill’s vehicle was located at a hotel in Van Buren Township the next morning and Cahill was taken into custody.

A female acquaintance is charged with accessory after the fact to a felony.

A probable cause conference is scheduled for Dec. 14.
