Group gathers signatures to impose term limits on Warren mayor

WARREN, Mich. – A group of Warren residents are gathering signatures to impose term limits on Mayor Jim Fouts in the wake of his alleged comments made about people with disabilities.

The city’s former deputy mayor is leading the Committee for Warren Term Limits in efforts to reverse a ballot proposal that extended mayoral term limits from 12 to 20 years.

“The Warren residents voted for term limits for their elected officials,” Mike Greiner said. “Fouts’ efforts to trick residents to let him get out from under these term limits cannot be allowed to stand.”

The Warren City Council passed a resolution in March on the ballot for the state primary.

“If we are able to get this issue before voters in a real general election with plenty of notice, I think we will have a very different result,” Greiner said. “August primaries are notoriously low turnout affairs, and that’s why Fouts chose to have the question appear on the ballot in that election. If it had appeared on the general election ballot, I bet the voters would have kept term limits.”

“He has raised taxes on Warren residents and businesses more than any other Mayor in history. He has made disparaging comments about the disabled that embarrassed us all, and he has opposed medical marijuana’s presence in Warren despite its support by a supermajority of residents.”

Term limits were first approved in Warren nearly 20 years ago.
