Illinois man charged in Romulus Amber Alert case

ROMULUS, Mich. – An Illinois man faces several charges after a woman's vehicle was stolen with her 16-month-old child inside early Saturday morning in Romulus.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office says 23-year-old Jawaan Johnson carjacked the 24-year-old woman about 2:23 a.m. in the 31100 block of Flynn Drive and intentionally drove off with her 16-month-old child.

Police issued an Amber Alert and a witness helped officers find Johnson near Merriman Road and Michigan Avenue. Johnson was arrested by Romulus police. Officers found the child unharmed and returned him to his mother.

Johnson is charged with two counts of carjacking, kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment and larceny. He was arraigned Monday and received a $100,000 cash bond. His next court date is May 27.
