Inkster City Council holds special meeting to discuss police beating

City manager says decision on disciplinary actions to be announced later this week

INKSTER, Mich. – Inkster residents looking for a final resolution in the police brutality case may be disappointed by Monday night's special City Council meeting.

City leaders announced the meeting is merely an update on the case -- a decision on the disciplinary actions won't come until the end of the week.

City Manager Richard Marsh took a moment to thank Inkster residents for keeping the peace during this difficult time.

"I can't say enough in terms of our citizens of Inkster. They have been very patient. They've been very tolerant, even though they didn't like what happened with this assault. Cool heads have prevailed," said Marsh.

Marsh asked for a little more patience in the investigation of the Floyd Dent police brutality case. Tuesday night, police will give the city manager a recommendation for moving forward. On Friday, Marsh will decide on who, if anyone, else in the Inkster Police Department will be disciplined. Marsh said police administration, police officers on the scene who kicked and used a Taser on Dent, as well as officers at the police station who laughed, celebrated and imitated Dent before giving him medical treatment, are being looked at.

"We'll make the determination of what action, if any, should be taken toward those officers," he said.

Police chief Vickie Yost has already resigned. William Melendez, the officer seen punching Dent, has been fired and charged criminally. Advocates of Dent want the city manager to clean house.

Marsh says he is looking forward to input from the community and that the buck stops with him. He'll make a final decision by Friday on disciplinary action.
