Jayru Campbell given probation for assault on girlfriend

DETROIT – Former Detroit Cass Tech High School football star Jayru Campbell has been sentenced to one year of probation and counseling after being convicted of assaulting his girlfriend.

Campbell pleaded guilty last month to a misdemeanor domestic violence charge.

He was sentenced Wednesday by 36th District Court Judge Ruth Carter.

Campbell will be required to undergo steroid testing and attend anger management and domestic violence counseling. Carter also suggested he be accepted into a mentoring program being run by former Detroit Mayor Dave Bing.

Video from a camera in the high school shows Campbell and the 17-year-old girl arguing over her cellphone in September. During Campbell's trial, the girl testified he started looking at messages and wouldn't give her the phone. She testified Campbell was holding her "hard," put his hands on her chest to move her and then picked her up.

The incident happened shortly after Campbell was released from jail after serving a 57-day sentence for body slamming a school security guard in January.

Campbell is already serving a seven-month jail sentence for probation violation.
