DETROIT – Detroit Cass Tech High School football star Jayru Campbell has been granted a plea deal for an assault charge involving a school security guard.
Prosecutors say the 17-year-old junior slammed the guard to the ground in January after refusing to follow school policy and pull a hood off his head. The confrontation was recorded on video.
He initially pleaded not guilty to a felony charge of assault with intent to do great bodily harm. However, in a hearing Friday, Wayne County Circuit Judge Timothy Kenny allowed Campbell to plea to a misdemeanor charge of aggravated assault -- in exchange for the following:
- Pay restitution to the complainant
- He undergo a psychiatric evaluation, then go to counseling for anger management, or a similar type of program.
- Write an apology that will be read in open court
- Progress reports be provided every three months
Any violations would result in jail time.
Kenny also ruled that Campbell be sentenced for the misdemeanor under the Holmes Youthful Trainee Act, which allows young defendants to have a conviction erased if they complete sentence terms.
He will be sentenced May 30.
Campbell has been readmitted to Cass Tech after being suspended when the video surfaced. He said he'll play football for Michigan State in 2015.
