Jeni's Ice Cream recalls frozen treats for listeria risk

Products of Ohio-based company are sold in metro Detroit stores

DETROIT – A second ice cream company is recalling all of its frozen treats because of listeria concerns and this one is sold in metro Detroit.

Stores are pulling Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream off shelves after health officials found listeria in a sample discovered by the Nebraska Department of Agriculture.

The recall hits close to home and stores like Whole Foods, Kroger and mom-and-pop retails stores are taking action.

All Jeni's products have been pulled, including ice cream, frozen yogurt, sorbets and ice cream sandwiches. The Ohio-based company issued the voluntary recall Thursday.

The bacteria is found in the soil and water, and can be tracked into a manufacturing plant. Listeria is unique because it thrives in cold temperatures.

In a statement the company said, "We have called in experts to help us find the root cause. We will be working with our suppliers to determine if the bacteria was introduced by one of the ingredients we use."

Jeni's has been very active on Facebook and Twitter. The company is responding to questions and concerns, including updates. The company appears to want to be proactive.

This is the second major ice cream recall due to listeria in days.

Those who are most at risk include young children, pregnant women, the elderly and those with a weakened immune system. Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, nausea and diarrhea.
