Kim Mathers returns to Shelby Township court as drunken driving case continues

Wife of Detroit rapper Eminem returns to court

SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. – The former wife of Detroit rapper Eminem returned Monday to a Shelby Township courtroom as her drunken driving case continues.

Kim Mathers' case was delayed by confusion over failed drug and alcohol tests, but now her case is nearing a close.

The case involving Mathers, her drunken driving crash and admitted suicide attempt is in a far different place than it was last year.

Mathers admitted in October 2015 that she got drunk and crashed her SUV into a ditch and a utility pole.

Her case was originally given attention because the court files were sealed, leading to speculation of preferential treatment. Once the files were opened, we learned Mathers not only admitted to the drinking, but that it was a suicide attempt.

Mathers was sentenced to one year of probation and drug and alcohol testing, but she might have failed six of those tests. Mathers and her attorney, Mike Smith, argued the tests were faulty.

Judge Douglass Shephard allowed Mathers to continue her probation, and 90 days later, she's testing clean.

Mathers asked Monday if the drug and alcohol tests could stop. Instead, the judge changed her drug testing to random screenings eight times per month.

Mathers said mentally, she's doing better.

Her probation is scheduled to end in March 2018.
