Kwame Kilpatrick loses appeal of conviction

Bobby Ferguson also loses appeal

DETROIT – Former Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has lost his appeal of his conviction on federal corruption charges.

A Michigan district court heard the appeal from Kilpatrick's counsel. The 6th Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati, Ohio then ruled the convictions and sentences of Kilpatrick and Bobby Ferguson are affirmed, or upheld.

Kilpatrick's restitution will be reconsidered.

"However, the district court's restitution award against Kilpatrick to the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department is vacated and remanded for proper calculation of the award," according to the court.

Kilpatrick is serving a 28-year prison sentence after being convicted on numerous corruption charges, including racketeering. He resigned from office in 2008 after pleading guilty to perjury. He's now housed at the Federal Correctional Institution in El Reno, Oklahoma.

Among his crimes were ripping off Detroit taxpayers in a pay-for-play city contract scheme with his buddy Bobby Ferguson.

Ferguson was sentenced to 21 years in prison for his conviction on similar charges.
