Arbor Hills Landfill workers go on strike, picket line blocks disposal area

Workers at Arbor Hills Landfill go on strike

NORTHVILLE, Mich. – Workers at Arbor Hills Landfill have gone on strike after over a year of unsatisfactory working conditions.

A picket line form at Arbor Hill Landfill, composed of 19 heavy equipment operators and mechanics who have been for more than a year without a contract from the landfill's parent company, Advanced Disposal.

“They haven’t bargained in good faith and after a year, our members voted to go on strike to make our voices heard.” said Dan McKernan “What our members are asking for is fairness-- fairness at the table, fairness in wages, fairness in their conditions.”

Members of Operating Engineers Local 324 said that wages and benefits at Arbor Hill are well below those for comparable jobs at other landfills.

“At the end of the day, everyone wants the same thing.” said Advanced Disposal spokesperson Joe Kohn. “Everyone wants to be back to work, doing what we do.”

Drivers who arrived at the landfill were forced to decide if they wanted to cross the picket line or take their haul to another landfill. Many chose to go elsewhere.

“We’re all united in this,” said McKernan.
