Laser pointed at helicopter in Commerce Township during police search

$2,500 reward offered in search for person who pointed laser at helicopter

COMMERCE TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A $2,500 reward is being offered in the search for a person who pointed a green laser at a helicopter that was helping police during a search Monday in Commerce Township.

Police said the Oakland County Sheriff's Office helicopter was helping deputies search the area of Benstein and Loon Lake roads when it was illuminated by a green laser.

Officials said the laser was coming from a place on the ground about 3 miles away. It lit up the helicopter three times.

The light appeared to come from the area of Arlis and Dickert street. Deputies searched the area, but the person with the laser wasn't found.

"Directing a laser at any kind of aircraft is extremely dangerous and will be taken seriously," Sheriff Michael J. Bouchard said. "I implore the Michigan Legislature to resume work on the legislation which failed to pass last year to further punish those who interfere with aircraft flying in our skies."

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
