Three people were killed Thursday when up to 40 vehicles were involved in a crash on westbound I-96 near Fowlerville.
All lanes of I-96 between M-52 and Fowlerville Road were closed, but the eastbount lanes reopened after 3 p.m. Thursday and the westbound lanes reopened after 10:30 p.m. Thursday.
Police believe the crash was caused by a sheet of black ice which drivers did not see. Visibility also was limited during snowfall. Several semi trucks were involved.
Authorities have scheduled a 3 p.m. press conference to share an update on their investigation. We'll have the live stream here.
It's not clear when either direction of the interstate will be reopened to traffic.
Jason Colthorp is reporting live from the scene (watch above).
