Same-sex couple in gay marriage case married in Southfield

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – The couple who sued the State of Michigan for the right to jointly adopt their children and made history when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled to legalize same-sex marriage, exchanged vows at a ceremony Saturday evening.

April DeBoer and Jayne Rowse were married in Southfield.

U.S. District Judge Bernard Friedman officiated the marriage ceremony.

Friedman heard the case and ultimately struck down Michigan's ban on same-sex marriage in 2014. In June, the Supreme Court said same-sex couples have the right to marry.

DeBoer has said more than 200 people were invited, but that the wedding was not open to the public.
