WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A Macomb County man is accused of handcuffing and assaulting his roommate without her permission.

The attack happened Jan. 3, 2024, at an apartment building in Washington Township, according to Macomb County prosecutors.

Dewitt Clinton Bunting, 31, of Washington Township, is accused of handcuffing and assaulting the woman inside the apartment against her will.

Bunting is charged with:

  • Unlawful imprisonment -- a 15-year felony.
  • Assault with a dangerous weapon -- a four-year felony.
  • Possession of less than 25 grams of cocaine -- a four-year felony.
  • Resisting and obstructing a police officer -- a two-year felony.
  • Felony firearm -- a two-year mandatory felony.
  • Domestic violence, second offense -- one-year misdemeanor.

Officials said Bunting was also charged with witness intimidation/interfering, a 10-year felony, because of jail calls made after his arrest.

“We will not tolerate attempts to silence victims or obstruct the truth,” Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido said. “Witness intimidation only adds another layer to the perpetrator’s alleged actions.”

Bunting was bound over on all counts. He’s scheduled to be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. April 29.
