Detroit police officer accused of threatening young nephew with department-issued taser

DETROIT – An officer with the Detroit Police Department has been charged with child abuse after allegedly threatening his nephew with a taser.

The incident happened April 17 at a home on East Outer Drive. According to authorities, Caleb Williams threatened and frightened his 10-year-old nephew by making his department-issued taser arc while standing close to him.

Williams was charged Friday, April 26, with second-degree child abuse and felonious assault. He received a $10,000 personal bond.

Conditions of his bond require he not possess weapons and have no contact with minors. Williams is expected to return to court May 3.

An official with the Detroit Police Department said they reviewed video of the incident and suspended Williams immediately, saying Williams’ actions in the video were a “gross violation” of the department’s policies.
