Deadly Dispute: Customer shot over cost of condoms

Gas station clerk kills customer

A dispute over the price of condoms led to a fatal shooting just after 1 a.m. Saturday in Detroit. Michael Haynes II entered a BP gas station on Fenkell near Meyers with a friend and approached the counter where he bought a box of condoms. Haynes felt he was overcharged and got angry when the clerk refused to refund his money.

According to Haynes's friend, "They started arguing. He was real mad and pushed over a cart in the aisle."

The friend said he and Haynes turned for the door, and the clerk came from behind the counter with a gun and shot Haynes once in the shoulder. Haynes died at Sinai Grace Hospital. Detectives will review surveillance video from inside the store before considering charges.
