Macomb County Jail is overcrowded

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. – Some Macomb County Jail inmates could see a reduced sentence after an overcrowding emergency was declared this week.

The population at the jail has exceeded the 1,200 inmate capacity for seven consecutive days. On Tuesday, the jail had more than 30 extra inmates.

State law gives officials 15 days to reduce the number of inmates in order to be 25 prisoners under capacity.

District judges will decide who can be given an earlier release.

The deadline to alleviate the issue is June 17.
