Man charged for biting Macomb County deputy

MACOMB TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A 21-year-old man has been charged for allegedly biting a Macomb County deputy, fleeing, and then hiding in a van.

Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said deputies were called Saturday to a Target on Hall Road for a shoplifting report. When a deputy tracked the suspect to a nearby Home Depot, the suspect --- identified as James Gist -- allegedly bit and punched the deputy during a confrontation.

The suspect then fled to a condominium complex and was found in an unlocked van, Wickersham said.

Gist initially tried to lie about his identity, but Wickersham said deputies were able to identify him through previous arrests.

The deputy who was bitten was not seriously hurt.

Gist was arraigned Monday on charges of assaulting, resisting and obstructing causing injury, retail fraud and lying to a peace officer.
